Abstract

With a view to possibly preventing the chattering in a machined-tool system, the materials having large internal damping such as castiron have been empirically employed and developped as those of the machine structure, continually accompanied by the desire for higher dynamic stiffness (lower dynamic compliance). However, the quantitative analysis for the chatter problems, which takes into account the contribution of internal friction in a structural metal to the stability, does not yet seem to be conducted. So, a theoretical analysis for the occurring mechanism of the self-exited chatter (especially, regenerative one), in an example of a turning cutting process, is presented, which permits the calculation of borderlines of stability from applying the internal friction conception of a real metal solid to the dynamic behaviors (dynamic compliance) of a machine structure assumed as a lumped parameter system with one degree of freedom. It follows from this analysis that the proposed simulation model, which takes the contribution of internal dissipation to the mechanical damping effect into consideration, can certainly explain the chattering more extensively than that proposed by MERRITT, whose originality is from the very often considered damping mechanism (external damping) which operates directly to the equivalent reduced mass of a structure system and parallelly with the spring element. An explanation for the chattering based upon the squared values of controlled area (from the deviation of machined・surface shapes) in linear feedback controlled theory, having the imperfection of neglecting the dynamic characteristics of the cutting processes and therefore admitting of more or less analytical verification, can be regarded as being good practice for the adaptive control to prevent the chattering.
