Abstract

The 4-parameter vibration model is first described which is characterized by the relaxation type of internal friction as well as the external damping elements as the influential factors on dynamic stiffness for machine structure. Its validity is discussed through the specimens of S55C. The effect of material damping on the stability (occurrence of regenerative chattering) in a turning process is investigated, using MERRITT's charts, with samples of high damping alloys. It follows that in an 88% Mn-Cu alloy having ⊿K (relaxation strength)=0.03, the degree of stability is presumed to be increased by about 25%, in the most effective case, in comparison with no material damping system and if materials having ⊿K=0.1 are developed, the increase is expected to be about 50%.
