Abstract

An apparatus has been devised for measuring the damping (Q-1) of evaporated metal films in the transversal mode of vibration. The specimen used in the present apparatus is the evaporated metal film 17μm thick, 5 mm wide and 50 mm long, being suspended at its nodal point in an appropriate D. C. magnetic field (3~90 Gauss). By feeding a small alternating current (30~60 mA), the specimen is vibrated at nearly the same frequency as its natural one. A frequency response curve for the measurement of Q-1 on the basis of the half width method, is practically obtained by sweeping the current frequency through the specimen from about 10 Hz up to 25 Hz for 10 sec, picking up the relative vibrational distance as the change in capacitance, and recording their waveforms by a light-beam oscillograph. At the same time, how the film damping depends on the strength of magnetic field is inspected from an angle of eddy current, with the result that its effect has not been clearly seen.
