Abstract

From a questionnaire data was gathered from new students on 24 factors relating to physical fitness and 12 relating to their living conditions. Using multiple regression analysis, we sought to determine the connections between environmental factors before entering college and their body build and physical fitness. In particular, this time we were concerned with endurance index and the differences in physiological functions, so that we analyzed the differences in effects of environmental factors on muscular endurance and total endurance respectively. Results may be summarized as follows: 1. Physical Factors: 1) “Length development” factors have a negative correlation with endurance(particularly total endurance.) 2) “Weight development” seemed to have no appraciable effect on muscular endurance, but “volume development” had a definite correlation with total endurance. 3) Those with large chest girth had high endurance, and particularly their muscular endurance was superior. 2. Environmental Factors. 1) Those who spent a year out of school (in cram schools to get another try at entrance exams) were below the level of those who entered directly from high school, being particularly low in muscular endurance. 2) Daily exercise had a beneficial effect on endurance and the effort to continue exercise had a good effect on raising endurance. 3) Membership in sports clubs in junior and senior high school had a high contribution to high endurance, suggesting the need for an above average exercise load during the teens. 4) The effect of one or two years of smoking on total endurance was observed and the need for measures to combat this was clear.
