Abstract

A newly developed high-damping alloy “SILENTALLOY" has been investigated of its damping capacity (Q-1) and rigidity-modulus (f2) by using an inverted torsion pendulum method, and the following results have been obtained: The alloy displays very little temperature-depences of Q-1 and f2, but has the strong γ (strain amplitude)-dependences; the Q-1 values linearly increase, reach the peak of about 0.016 at γ=0.7 x 10-4~1.3 x 10-4 and then decrease slowly with increasing γ, while the f2 values gradually diminish, and then take a constant one with increasing γ. Both the amplitude-dependences can be well explained by means of a mechanical model having an elastic hysteresis mechanism. The model suggests that, in most of materials having the statichysteresis damping mechanisms, their Q-1 and f2 should be similar to those of the alloy, and that their free oscillatory decayed curves should exhibit a tendency for their envelopes to be of a bulge type.
