Abstract

A model is proposed to interprete the unusual behavior of the internal friction of evaporated metal films. The free decay curve of torsional vibration in evaporated films, especially in bismuth films, are characterized by the asymmetry against the time axis and also by the dependence of the asymmetry on the holding time at the initially twisted state before the free vibration. The value of Q-1 is also increased with increment in the asymmetry. A mechanical model proposed is that composed of a spring, parallelly connected spring and dash pot, and a mass; that is identical to the standard linear solid to which a mass is attached. A mathematical treatment and also a simulation with an anlaogue computer are successful to interprete the unusual behavior of the internal friction. It is concluded that the proposed model, rather than the conventional model, is proper for the most solids and the fact that the asymmetry and its accompanying features are not usually seen may be due to the smaller relaxation strength and the longer relaxation time in usual bulk materials.
