Abstract

Decomposed granite soils are the residual soils which derive mainly from granitic rocks
and which have remained in situ. They are called “Masa-do" in Japanese and are widely distributed in south-western part of Japan.
The area which is covered by these soils is a problem area in that changes in the density of the soil have been brought about by cutting and banking and,furthermore,s lope faiureis caused by rainfall. As a result,t here is an increasing number of slope failures in the area.
Accordingly,investigations and experiments were carried out on weathered surface solis at construction sites and the engineering properties of these soils was measured. This report is based on the data obtained and examines the quantitative correlation between the degree of weathering and the engineering properties of the soils.
