Abstract

Two directions for teaching English can be considered; one is building up learners' basic knowledge of English, and the other is motivating learners to learn the language actively with interest. In essence, the two directions are not contradictory, but in planning classroom practice, they can be opposing because the former usually involves a teacher-centered approach with explicit teaching of discrete grammatical points while the latter usually involves a learner-centered approach with implicit and holistic teaching through various communicative activities. Based on the recognition that both are important for Japanese university students, this paper presents two models in terms of goal setting, material selection, syllabus design, evaluation method, and other educational factors. It also introduces approaches and methods geared for achieving each goal, and seeks possibilities to integrate the two directions in one syllabus or curriculum.
