Abstract

It is expected that the effect of friction load is greater than the effect of normal load in the occurrence and propagation mechanism of fatigue cracks of the contact area. In the previous report,the stress distribution by only normally loaded,periodically spaced semi-ellipsoid pressures in a semi-infinite elastic body was calculated. In this paper is shown the results of calculation of the stress field due to both normal and frictional loading. It is suggested,from the above numerical calculations,that a much more severe stress state occurs than with only normal loading,and that damage starts from a point much closer to the surface.
