Abstract

With the needs of the thin wall and weight-saving product, quantities of production of aluminum are increasing more and more. It is important to control the casting conditions in order to obtain the sound and high functional products. The present study is focused on the cold flakes in the shoot sleeve of the aluminum alloy die casting. The solidified layer generated in the early stages of die casting when the molten metal charges in contact with bottom of sleeve, it is exfoliated with the movement of the plunger, and it is called the cold flakes. If the cold flakes flow into the cavity region then the mechanical properties of product deteriorate. As a prediction method of casting defect caused by the cold flakes, the numerical simulation is done to analyze the dynamic behaviors of the cold flakes. A generation condition of the cold flake and the equations of motion that considered gravity, buoyancy, fluid drag were built in the present study. The movement of cold flake was traced by solving momentum equations by Runge-Kutta-Gill method. From calculated results, the behavior of cold flakes varies by the several conditions, which are the initial temperature of molten metal, sleeve temperature and so on.
