Abstract

Not a few fires at engine room of ships are caused by spilled oil at the hot surface of the machines such as turbo-charger. In this study, an experimental apparatus is constructed to investigate the ignition condition of the oil dropped onto the hot-plate in the combustion chamber under the control of the velocity and the temperature of supplied air. Some characteristics of self-ignition phenomenon related to the condition of supplied air are understood through some experiments using the apparatus. CFD calculation using OpenFOAM is also tried to simulate the experiments. Some qualitative tendencies are seen in the results of calculation.
