In Murō Saisei’s late novel titled Mitsu no aware, an elderly seventy-year old author and a goldfish that transforms into a young girl appear. The style consists entirely of conversation. Both characters are conscious of approaching death, but the elderly author lives vicariously through the goldfish, who chooses to live by consuming the remainder of her own life. The goldfish has spiritual powers, and communicates with the ghost of woman who had been fond of the author. While examining the meanings that can be read from this content, the author will consider the impressions that can be had from this novel.
