An original version of this paper was presented in the format of a poster presentation in the Conference of Female Scholars, held in Tokyo, in Dec. 2013. Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes utilized each other’s talent and shared some special moments in rivalry as artists. Under repressive situations, Sylvia Plath found a poetic resource, creating very powerful poems which could free herself from reality. Inner struggles caused in repression and destruction eventually lead her to make her own poetic world. Analyzing the structure of repression and creation along with her rival relationship with Ted Hughes could broaden our views to better understand her poems. This thesis focuses on their poems, both titled “Brasilia”, both from the colonial context and from their comparative cultures’ points of view. |
