I examined Murō Saisei’s image of young girls as depicted in his autobiographic novel, Aru shōjo no shi made (Up to the Death of a Certain Young Girl), in comparison with Chō (Butterfly) by the same author. In the former, Fujiko, who is the emotional support of the young protagonist, and in the latter, Yama-chin, the friend of the daughter of the protagonist, both die early deaths from sickness. I examine how the narrator in both works describes how these girls are remembered and represented, and consider the themes of each of these novels.
