In South African local elections 2016, African National Congress has been the largest party, earning 53.91% of the total vote. However, popular support for the ANC fell to its lowest level since 1994, and ANC lost control of three metropolitan municipalities, Nelson Mandela Bay, City of Tshwane and City of Johannesburg. Democratic Alliance, the opposition party, got control of those three metropolitan municipalities instead of ANC. This local election may show a turning point in South African politics, which might be suggested a fluctuation of the predominant party system by ANC. This paper examines the possibilities of changes from the bottom in the South African politics, and the political trend in near future, focusing on the Gauteng province.
