This research analyzed Japanese data from the Carnegie International Survey of the Academic Profession and the Changing Academic Profession in Asia Survey to compare of educational activities 1992 and 2011. The results were as follows. 1) There was no pronounced change in hours per week that faculty members spent on teaching, research, administration and management, and social services. The total number of hours was approximately 50 per week. 2) Graduate school expansionary policies enacted in the 1990s broadened the range of educational activities. 3) Acquisition of funding from the Support for University Education Reform throughout national, public, and private universities by the Ministry of Education program facilitated faculty members at research universities spending increased time on educational activities. In addition, because of the increase in university departments offering advanced professional skills training, health/medical science professors increased the time dedicated to educational activities. 4) In 1992 and 2011, the amount of time that humanities and social sciences professors at non-research universities spent on educational activities exceeded that of non-humanities and social sciences professors at research universities. This indicates that the universities and departments reporting higher statistics had already experienced student body diversification by 1992. 5) Many faculties cited upgrades and improvements in equipment and facilities. However, attention must be paid to budgets in regard to future expectations for upgrades and improvements. Competitive funding has an effect on educational activities of university faculty members. Research universities, with their historical and organizational advantages, enjoy the numerous benefits of successful funding procurement, while newer and more regional/small-scale universities encounter unrelenting challenges. Quality assurance at non-research universities and in humanities and social science departments is left primarily to individual efforts of the teaching staff because of limitations in financial support and organizational strength. Bolder changes to collegiate systems and more robust support structures are positive initiatives to ensure that excessive burdens do not fall on the shoulders of the teaching professionals.
