The purpose of this paper is to clarify the identity of the 4th and 5th generation of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii. The survey was conducted on three people in English. The conclusions are as follows;
1) The identities of the three people are very different from each other and cannot simply be generalized.
2) On the other hand, there are three things in common.
(1) They believe that the 4th and 5th generation of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii and the people who were born and grew up in the mainland of US are same“ American” but distinguished from each other.
(2) They have some experience of facing an identity crisis or questioning their own identities when they travelled abroad.
(3) Their identities are fluid and multitiered.
This paper is one of the very first reports on the identities of the 4th and 5th generation of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii. More research is needed to get an accurate picture of their identities.
