聴覚に障害のある生徒に英語はどのように教えられているか,について実際の英語の授業の観察と全国のろう学校中学部へのアンケートで実情把握とした。授業観察は聴覚障害関係学科が置かれている大学と中学校難聴学級の二つの状況を観察することができた。大学での授業方法が中学校の授業には,例えば,ライティングの指導や英文読解など主に視覚を利用する授業が主流を占めていることなどが参考になると考えられる。また,アンケートについては,3分の1をわずかに上回る回収率ではあったが,全国にわたって回答が得られた。この中では,聴覚障害のある生徒に対する教員の姿勢,授業のあり方などが数字の上で明確に示された。また,ALTの制度がまだ徹底していないことも分かった。本研究ではこのように,単に英語の授業形態や方法にとどまらず,今後の聴覚障害のある生徒に対する英語教育など,広く教育行政までも検討する必要に及ぶことを示唆するものになった。

This study investigated how hard-of-hearing students are taught English in Japan by observing classes and by administering a questionnaire to junior high schools for the deaf throughout the country. The observation was conducted of two classes at different schools. One was an English lesson for hearing impaired students at a college, while the other was a lesson at a junior high school for the deaf. The observational results suggest that junior high school education could benefit from some of the methods used at college, in particular with regard to reading and writing. Questionnaire data was obtained from more than one-third of all schools for the deaf in Japan. The responses described methods of teaching and teacher interaction with students. The responses also demonstrated that the ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) system has not developed substantially in schools for the deaf. By way of conclusion, it is suggested that improvements in English teaching need to be considered against the background of improvements to the overall educational system for the hearing impaired.
