Abstract

Twenty-three cerebrovascular accident patients (CVA) were subjects in a study of gait speed, in which the kinesioloigic effect of speed on the affected lower extremity was studied. The change in joint angle and degrees/second of the affected lower extremity during normal gait and fast gait were compared, and the correlation between fast gait and degrees/second was studied. Results showed that with a change in speed, the difference in the joint angle between hip flexion and extension was significant, but, for the knee, no significance could be found for all the joint angles. The relationship between fast gait time and degrees/second for hip flexion and extension had a good correlation. In addition, there was a good correlation, for knee flexion during stance phase and swing phase. Consequently, the author suggests that in order for CVA patients to speed up their gait, kinesiologically, they must use momentum to swing the hip forward during swing phase. Also, during the stance phase, hip and knee joint stability becomes very important.
