本論文は, 大学英語教育におけるESP(English for Specific Purposes)のあり方を, 特に看護教育課程において探るものである。大学入学時に行った意識調査と1年半後の学生の意識調査, さらに卒業まぎわに行った意識調査を元に, 入学時から卒業に至るまでの3年間の在学期間で, 学生の英語学習に対する意識がどのように変化したかを探る。その上で, 看護教育課程における専門科目を学習する上での, 英語力及び英語学習の必要性の認識についてを明らかにすることを目的とする。また, 卒業後の希望進路により英語学習のあり方に違いがあるかどうかについても検討する。その結果, 看護教育における英語教育の在り方は, 目的が明確でないという問題を抱えていることが明らかとなった。

ESP (English for Specific Purposes) involves English language research and instruction designed for students or working adults to the language and language contexts of a particular major or occupation. English education at universities or colleges must be, more or less, influenced by the students' specialties. The previous study shows what students need is different from what teachers think students should learn. In order to investigate the students' attitudes toward English, questionnaires are given at three periods of their three year college life. This paper analyzes the changes of the students attitudes after one and a half year's college education and also the changes made by three years' nursing curriculum. Moreover, it reports the differences between the students with different intentions after graduation. It is concluded that English education in nursing curriculum has only vague purposes, which seems to be a serious problem.
