This paper deals with Hyakuzou Kurata's play, Shunkan, from the following points of view: 1) a comparison of Shunkan with its original text, Tale of the Heike, in order to analyze their differences and similarities ; 2) a consideration of the relationship between Shunkan and the author's biographical background, especially focusing on the time he wrote it ; 3) a comparison of Kurata's Shunkan with those of his literary contemporaries, Kan Kikuchi's Shunkan and Ryunosuke Akutagawa's Shunkan, with an analysis of their differences and similarities ; 4) an analysis of the relationship between Kurata's Shunkan and Sophocles' Greek tragedy Philoctetes in terms of their similarities.
