Itsukushima Shrine has four letters written by the sons of Fujiwara Shinzei (1106?-1160). These letters were burnt during the mid-Meiji period but written copies have come down to us. An examination and analysis of these letters has shown that these letters are in praise of Itsukushima Naishi (shrine maiden) under the pretext of the sons of Fujiwara Shinzei，and were written at around the mid-13^th century. It seems reasonable to conclude that past research on the sons of Fujiwara Shinzei using these letters are mistaken and in need of correction.
