本研究の目的は，地域のがんサロン参加を通じて，がん体験者が新たな社会的役割を獲得する過程を明らかにすることとした。研究協力者はA県B支部の在宅ホスピスボランティアが運営しているサロン参加者のうち，がん体験者であり，5年以上継続してサロンに参加している3名とし，1時間程度の半構造的面接を実施した。質的分析の結果，社会的役割を獲得する過程は，『苦悩から生じる出会いへの希求』『癒され体験による母親役割の再生』『がん体験をいかした地域づくり』の3つのコアカテゴリが浮上した。これらは，9個のカテゴリーと35個のサブカテゴリーで構成された。役割獲得に至るためには，受容・承認してもらえる他のがん体験者の存在が必要不可欠であることと，子育て期の人は親子ともにがんの影響を受け，サロンはがんをもつ一人の人として過ごすことができる場として機能し，『がん体験をいかした地域づくり』に広がっていることがわかった。

"The aim of this study was to clarify the processes by which cancer survivors acquire new social roles through participating in community “cancer salon” support meetings. The study looks at a salon run by home hospice volunteers and chose as research subjects three salon members who are cancer patients and have taken part in the salon for over five consecutive years. The study conducted semi-structured interviews of around one hour each. Qualitative analysis resulted in three core categories of processes for acquiring social roles: “strong desire to meet others stemming from distress/agony,” “reclaiming the role of a mother through healing and experience,” and “community development making use of cancer experiences.” These core categories are made up of nine categories and 35 subcategories. It was shown that there are preliminary steps which must be undergone leading up to the acquisition of roles, and that it is absolutely necessary for there to be other cancer patients present who will provide their acceptance and approval. Furthermore, for someone who is raising children, both parent and child will be affected by cancer; the study showed that the salon may serve a function of “community development making use of cancer experiences.”
